Learn more. Already posted this on the LPH forum, but I guess it makes sense to post it here as well! I spent some time measuring and experimenting with the different circuit types in the Logic Pro X Compressor.

I did this by measuring harmonics using a spectrograph and an RX6 spectrogram as well as analyzing the waveform envelope using Aurchitect Spectre. Mostly a lot of experimenting, null testing and comparing. I either own, have owned or have used all of the hardware compressors that inspired the circuit types.

One of the main differences is the lack of even order harmonics, which is an expected difference between analog hardware and plug-ins, the latter typically only exhibiting odd order harmonics. Furthermore, these are not emulations, more “inspired by”.

Measurements and descriptions are based on the relevant LPX Compressor circuit, not the source hardware. As far as I know there are no resources anywhere on the Internet or in the manual that contain these specific details about the Logic Pro X Compressor.

This PDF won’t replace your ears, but if you wonder what’s going on in the different circuit types in the Compressor then you might find a clue in this PDF. Please don’t upload this PDF anywhere else, but feel free to link directly to it on my server or to this thread.

This way I can always keep it updated, if necessary. Great stuff! My Studio. Yes, understanding more about how they react can help you make more qualified decisions.

Imo they did a really good job with the compressor I was using softube and slate emulations for a long time but in the last 6 months for various reasons I gave to the logic compressor more space in my mixes with very good results In the end it’s really about how you use it.

Lagerfeldt, if you’re able to comment, how do you think the quality of these Logic plugins compares to other similar types? Very helpful, thanks, much appreciated. Some compressors have a hidden ratio dependent cap, such as the old but excellent Waves Renaissance Compressor: e. Raising the ratio will also raise the range. That’s a good question. Wall of text alert! First of all, the Logic Compressor can do the job just as well as many other compressors.

There’s nothing inherently bad or exceptionally good about it, although it does offer more flexibility than other stock DAW compressors. Secondly, these circuits aren’t emulations, although they aspire to react a bit like their source inspirations. If you want actual emulations go for the UAD versions instead, although you might be disappointed in the way most emulations fail to capture the harmonics of the analog hardware.

This is awesome. I have seen basic references to the circuit types here and there, but this is most comprehensive to date. That was great, thanks for taking the time to do this! Thanks for putting the cheat sheet together. Very useful; thank you very much! What of limiter section to right.

What can be said of its properties that might be interesting or useful? Are characteristics constant for each circuit? The H-EQ is relatively known, but I’ve a sneaking suspicion the ‘type’ selector on the compressor could also be identified specifically – despite what Waves and other gearslutz have said.

Hey gang, long time listener, first time caller. Can someone help me understand the “Compressor Tools”? One of my faves is the “Platinum Analog Tape” tool. I don’t really know what it’s doing, but I keep going back to it and would love to understand a bit more about what is happening behind the scenes. Any ELI5-type answers? Lagerfeldt , sigh. Your longest and most coherent text after that magnificent cheat sheet, should be laminated, was to tell us what’s missing.

Lagerfeldt , thanks man. Really appreciate the depth in your answer. And yes, ELI-5 compliant. This is exactly what I’ve been dreaming of! Thanks for such a great Logic Compressor reference sheet!!
