We then purchased and installed MS-Office ; but Outlook still presents the same error when trying to connect to Exchange server.

I created a new Windows user on another system running MS-Office and was able to easily connect to exchange server. Where can I find a removal tool for older versions of MS-Office to ensure no remnant of those versions is still on this system and possibly interfering with version?
